I got the feeling that some of the scenes where simply there for the Dark Universe genesis, and they really drag the movie down by bloating it’s 110 minutes with annoying filler. The problem with the narrative is that it tries too hard to set up future films, thus failing this one. The story is convoluted yes, but it is interesting and fun in moments. Though I have to say I found the criticism of the film to be exaggerated and in places, misleading. Now don’t get me wrong, it is not the worst movie, I found it actually funny and relatable for most of the time, but it still did not manage to reach my expected level, especially since it was trying to lay the foundations for Universal’s Dark Universe. So considering this premise, The Mummy had to be really good in order to impress. Especially when this is the 14 th movie in that franchise, and some of its predecessors have actually been hits. ![]() Rebooting a franchise is a very difficult thing, sometimes even impossible.
